Another Thursday, another Scenes from the Screen! This week's hint on Instagram listed four details about our subject; 1) This location is across the pond 2) It's known for it's gardens 3) A popular Celtic group performed here 4) Anne Hathaway filmed something here. Did you guess it? Today we're looking at Powerscourt Estate and the many things that have been filmed there.
The Scene
Powerscourt Estate, House & Gardens is located in County Wicklow, Ireland. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic I'm still digging into my past trip archives and this particular trip dates back to 2013. As I mentioned in my introductory blog post, I am a musician and this was one of my first big musical adventures; a trip across Ireland with my high school choral groups. Unfortunately I forgot my nice camera on the tour bus that day though, so the only photos that I was able to take are from the disposable camera I bought in the gift shop. Whoops!
Originally a castle, Powerscourt was turned into a mansion by the 1st Viscount Powerscourt in 1741 and Richard Castle, a German architect (unlike the one from the show Castle ;). Many alterations and renovations have been done in the long years since. The Estate is currently owned by the Slazenger family, who purchased it from the 9th Viscount Powerscourt in 1961. The acclaimed gardens at Powerscourt include the Italian Garden, the Walled Garden, the Japanese Garden, the Pets Cemetery, Tower Valley and numerous unique statues and trees. Inside the house itself, visitors can be treated to shopping and the Avoca Terrace Café (at which I had leek soup and a sandwich, if I can remember correctly!) Other exciting attractions at the Estate include the highest waterfall in Ireland, a distillery, golf club, and hotel. Powerscourt is also a highly desired location for weddings and events.

The Screen
As stated on the Powerscourt Estate, House & Gardens website, "over twenty-five different movies and TV series have been shot at Powerscourt Estate since Laurence Olivier started the trend by filming Henry V here in 1944." Some of the highlights include Vikings on History, Ella Enchanted, and King Arthur. Many of these productions filmed scenes at the Powerscourt waterfall and in the various gardens. Below is a scene shot from Vikings in front of the waterfall and a scene shot from Ella Enchanted featuring Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy in the Powerscourt grounds. Additionally Celtic Woman, a popular Irish group, gave their Songs From the Heart concert at Powerscourt Estate in 2009. The concert was filmed by PBS as a television special and later released on DVD. You can see the trailer for the concert special below.

Powerscourt Estate re-opened to the public on June 29th, 2020 after shutting down due to the Pandemic. Social distancing and other guidelines are being implemented at the property though. For those who are not European, like me, just a visit to the Powerscourt Estate, House & Gardens website will satisfy your wanderlust while travel is restricted. As usual, links for everything I talked about will be available below.
I hope you enjoyed reading about this week's magical scene and the many productions that have been filmed there. Next week I'll be switching it up and posting a "Greetings From..." story. A hint will be up on Tuesday! Additionally, I'm working on a fun feature about unique and personalized wallpapers throughout history that will be coming within the next two weeks. On Monday, there'll be another Mac Weekly Highlight- so check back for that!
I've gained a few new readers in the past week and just wanted to say that I'm really grateful to have you all here. ❤
Talk soon!
