Thirty. Three. Views! That's HUGE, y'all! Thank you so much to everyone who tuned in to read my Salem feature this past Thursday. It's been my most-read article since I started Mac Claire in August and I'm so grateful. I'd started a few blogs in the past and never kept them going because I was always afraid that no one would read them, so the fact that thirty-three strangers took the time to read what I had to say this past week means the world- seriously. Enough with the gushing though! It's Monday, which means the work week has begun and I am here to brighten your day with my Mac Weekly Highlight; last week's best finds in Music, Arts & Culture. Today I'll be discussing a skeletal oil painting, The Rower's Rhythm, and an adorably heroic television special, the American Humane Hero Dog Awards. Let's get to it!
Art
The Rower's Rhythm, Kirsi Julku
I learned of this young, Finn artist recently when she was featured by Mouthing Off Magazine, and I was struck by the juxtaposition in her oil painting, The Rower's Rhythm; the gothic-looking skeleton smiling in a bright, modern kayak. Of her work, Julku says "I like to balance between the real and the surreal, between beauty and the barren. Because it’s not always the beautiful things that matter in this world but it is also the old, ugly, dark and unusual what makes everything complete." Julku has more skeleton oil paintings in her portfolio, which can be viewed on kirsijulku.com. And though these skeletal paintings have nothing to do with Halloween, they are a treat for those who love all things spooky during the month of October!

Television
American Humane Hero Dog Awards
Last Monday evening, the Hallmark Channel aired the 10th Annual American Humane Hero Dog Awards in a COVID-safe setting. This wholesome event introduced us to seven specially-nominated dogs and their handlers, all trained in various backgrounds: Guide/Hearing, Therapy, Law Enforcement, Service, Search and Rescue, Shelter, and Military. The dogs, as well as many veterinarians and humanitarians, were acknowledged for their incredible work throughout the night. At the end of the evening one of the seven heroic canines became the 2020 American Humane Hero Dog. If you missed the awards, don't fret! You can watch the entire show for free on the Hallmark Channel website.
