Happy Monday! I'm excited to be bringing you my very first Mac Weekly Highlight. Below are my favorite things that I consumed from Music, Arts & Culture during the week of August 9th, 2020. So without further ado, here's the list:
The Bookshop
This 2017 film takes place in 1950s England and the plot follows the journey of a widow who decides to open a bookshop in her small, conservative, coastal town. The move gains her both friends and adversaries. The film is a poignant and bittersweet snapshot of everyday life; we see the protagonist experience success and failure, joy and pain. Lastly, The Bookshop is a true demonstration of how one life can affect another. It is currently available to watch on multiple streaming platforms and VOD.

World of Dance feat. Oxygen
This past week NBC aired the Season Finale of World of Dance. While reality competition shows aren't everyone's cup of tea, I've enjoyed this one immensely over the years. It allows dancers from all over the world and different disciplines of dance to showcase their artistry and talent on a huge television platform that will help their career, regardless of whether or not they win the competition. One of my favorite performing artists this season was Oxygen, an urban/contemporary group from the Netherlands. What made them stand out was their choreography by group founder Jennifer Romen, their cleanliness, and the beautiful pictures they created through movement. I won't spoil the ending by telling you whether they win or not, so be sure to check it out if you are interested! If you want to see content from Oxygen, they can be found at @we.are.oxygen on social media.

Encyclopedia Womannica
I have been listening to this podcast for a few weeks now and I absolutely love it! Brought to us by Wonder Media Network, Encyclopedia Womannica releases short, daily podcasts Monday through Friday about women in history. Each month there is a new theme; August's theme is Musicians. So far they've covered Aretha Franklin, Amy Beach, Patsy Cline, Billie Holiday, Celia Cruz, and many others. It's the perfect podcast to listen to while you're getting ready for the day and hopefully it will teach you something new too!

Luke Jerram, In Memoriam
This past week I was introduced to British multimedia artist Luke Jerram by an article in the Financial Times. His current work, In Memoriam, is a temporary memorial for those lost to COVID-19 and a tribute to the health care workers and volunteers who have cared for COVID-19 patients. The installation is open air and displays flags created from bed sheets and arranged in a pattern that creates the medical cross logo. It is currently being shown in a tour across Europe. Even though the work won't be reaching the USA's shores, the impact is still felt internationally since the Coronavirus Pandemic has affected us all. For more information on Luke Jerram and In Memoriam, check out his website: https://www.lukejerram.com.
Thank you for tuning in to the first Mac Weekly Highlight! I hope that I was able to bring a new movie, television show, dance group, podcast, and art installation/artist into your life and that you enjoyed seeing my favorites.
See you back here next Monday!
~Claire
