Mac Weekly Highlight 9/6/2020

Hello readers- I hope you had a wonderful weekend and that this Monday finds you well! For us New-Englanders the weather is starting to trend cooler, but our hearts are with everyone on the West Coast who are struggling with historic wildfires amidst a Pandemic. Please stay safe and healthy ❤. Let's get to this week's highlights; I hope they inspire you, bring you joy, and give you hope for the weeks ahead.

Dance

The Table of Silence Project 9/11, Buglisi Dance Theatre, Choreography Jacqulyn Buglisi

This past Friday was the 19th Anniversary of 9/11, a tragic day in American history. For ten years, The Table of Silence Project 9/11 has been performed in NYC's Lincoln Center on the morning of September 11th; this year was no different. Due to the Pandemic, the work was performed part-live and part pre-recorded. The live performers were masked and dancers from across the globe who couldn't be in Lincoln Center this year provided individual video performances that were melded together as Études. The Project evokes feelings of mourning and grief, but also meditation and peace, through inventive props (like plates which demonstrate the idea of coming together to join in a meal of peace), powerful movement, and ritualistic instruments like conch shells, bells, trumpets, drums, a violin, and a flute.

Television

Glow Up

Brought to us by the BBC and Netflix, the second season of Glow Up is just as colorful and feel-good as the first! Glow Up is a reality competition show devoted to finding Britain's next Make-Up star. Judges and industry icons Val Garland and Dominic Skinner oversee the young, aspiring Make-Up Artists (or MUAs) through weeks of challenges. Completing looks for London Fashion Week, The Lion King in the West End, the medical drama Holby City, and Strictly Come Dancing (the British version of Dancing with the Stars) was just a portion of the challenges. My favorite parts of Glow Up are the creativity of the contestants and the upbeat nature of the show, despite it being a competition. As Val would say, this show is "Ding Dong!"

Fashion

"On the Runway: How Fashion is Meeting the Moment"

September is Fashion Month, but it will be very different this year. The New York Times Events' "On The Runway" series is following Fashion Month and hosting virtual events. "How Fashion is Meeting the Moment" was a conversation with Tory Burch, Virgil Abloh, Gwyneth Paltrow, Antoine Arnault, and NYT fashion critic Vanessa Friedman. Their discussion revolved around fashion's place in our current climate; how fashion shows are being re-conceptualized, how consumers are spending, sustainability in terms of both environmentally-friendly fashion production and company/brand longevity, and diversity efforts in response to the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement. "How Fashion is Meeting the Moment" was a lovely precursor to the one-of-a-kind Fashion Month we are about to have.
